Dr. Pradip Kumar Sarmah
Dr. Pradip Kumar Sarmah is the founding President of PRIDE COOP (Pragjyotishpur Recycling Initiative for Development & Environment Cooperative Society Limited) and a recognized social innovator and development leader in the cooperative movement. With a professional background as a veterinarian and over three decades of hands-on experience in rural development, livelihoods, and urban poverty alleviation, Dr. Sarmah has dedicated his life to building institutions that serve the last mile.
His work has consistently focused on bridging dignity and opportunity for the underserved—especially informal workers like waste pickers (now proudly called PRIDE KARMI)—by integrating them into structures that are self-managed, and sustainable cooperative systems. Dr. Sarmah's leadership has led to the creation of innovative models that combine technology, environmental stewardship, and people-centric governance.
He is also the founder of The Rickshaw Bank, an award-winning initiative that provided asset-based empowerment to thousands of rickshaw pullers across India, gaining global recognition and partnerships from institutions like the World Bank, Ashoka Foundation, and MIT. This global connectivity and credibility continue to shape his vision for PRIDE COOP as a scalable and replicable model in the waste management ecosystem.
Through PRIDE COOP, he envisions a future where waste is not a burden but a resource, and where waste pickers are not invisible but respected environmental warriors. His approach emphasizes cooperation within cooperation, fostering partnerships between citizens (PRIDE MITRA), institutions, and frontline waste workers to build a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive society.
Dr. Sarmah is also the founder of several nationally acclaimed initiatives and has worked extensively with governments, corporate CSR wings, and international development agencies. His passion for transforming systems from the ground up, coupled with his deep connection to the values of equity, ecology, and empowerment, continues to inspire a growing community of changemakers.

The mission of PRIDE Coop is to accelerate systemic climate action solutions and innovation through education and entrepreneurship.
