PRIDE COOP Holds Inaugural General Meeting in Guwahati, Marking a Milestone for Climate Cooperatives in India

Guwahati, Assam — February 6, 2025: The Pragjyotishpur Recycling Initiative for Development & Environment Cooperative Society Limited (PRIDE COOP) held its Inaugural General Meeting (IGM) at the Akshar Forum, Pamohi, in the presence of esteemed guests, cooperative members, and key stakeholders. The event was graced by Mr. Anupam Hazarika, Inspector of the Cooperative Department, Government of Assam, who oversaw and acknowledged the formal commencement of PRIDE COOP’s cooperative journey.

PRIDE COOP, India’s first-of-its-kind Climate Cooperative, was officially registered under the Assam Cooperative Registration Act with Registration No. ZJ-77/2024-25. Authorized as a Zonal Cooperative, it will operate across eight districts of Assam: Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Morigaon, Nagaon, and Hojai. The cooperative has been conceptualized by Pyxera Global and is supported by the PepsiCo Foundation, showcasing a unique collaboration between global impact organizations and grassroots stakeholders.

Vision of the meeting

The meeting served as a platform to present the vision, mission, and operational blueprint of the cooperative to its founding members and district representatives. During the session, key points of discussion included the governance structure, member roles, financial systems, and the roadmap for climate-oriented services.

In his keynote address, Mr. Anupam Hazarika lauded the initiative as “a visionary step toward climate resilience and cooperative development in Assam.” He emphasized the importance of such people-centric, sustainable models in addressing the dual challenges of environmental degradation and unemployment.

PRIDE COOP aims to foster sustainable livelihoods through entrepreneurship and environmental education, driving systemic solutions for climate change. By providing environmental services and nurturing green enterprises, it seeks to transition local economies from the traditional “take-make-waste” approach to a more circular and regenerative model.

The meeting also included an interactive session with members who shared ideas for local implementation strategies in their respective districts. The enthusiasm and commitment from all attendees signaled a strong beginning for PRIDE COOP’s operations.

As it moves forward, PRIDE COOP envisions itself as a beacon of innovation and climate action, empowering communities through cooperative efforts, partnerships, and grassroots solutions. The inaugural meeting concluded with a collective pledge to uphold the values of transparency, collaboration, and climate responsibility.

With its official inauguration now complete, PRIDE COOP is set to roll out its programs and outreach in the coming months, ensuring that sustainability becomes not just a vision, but a lived reality for communities across Assam.

“Half of our world is lost chasing growth without roots. The other half, in cleaning up what we ignored. Let us pause, regroup, and build something circular, together — grounded, green, and just.”
